News about the MUA 3.7 and 3.8 project cycle

If you remember our last newsletter a couple of weeks ago, there were a few issues left hanging with regard to the 3.7 and 3.8 MUA projects.

We hoped to include the Ability to set activity dates based on course start/end date or enrollment date (often abbreviated to "Relative dates") as our new 3.7 project, after the Course overview project was implemented early, in Release 3.6. We were waiting for a detailed estimate of the work involved from Moodle HQ and we therefore postponed the 3.8 voting period too.

The Relative dates estimate arrived yesterday but it was for a trimmed down version, not for the whole project as specified by MUA. There is just not enough time for the whole project now. Moodle 3.7 is due out in May and code freeze is in early April (?).

Therefore at the MUA committee meeting earlier today we decided:

  • To NOT go forward with the trimmed down Relative dates project for 3.7.
  • To ask HQ for a new ballpark costing for the whole Relative dates project (with all core Moodle activities included) with a view to possible inclusion in Moodle 3.8.
  • To include the Relative dates project in the MUA 3.8 projects for voting.
This cannot be immediate and anyway some MUA members have asked for voting to be further postponed in order to remove overlap with the holiday season.

So the committee has today decided to postpone voting in the 3.8 project cycle to 2 - 16 January 2019, with renewed inclusion of the Relative dates project.

The rationale for the committee's decision is multi-factor. The main drawback to the Relative dates project estimate sent was that we would obtain less functionality than desired but at a high-end cost. Also, we understood that there is not enough time for HQ to do more for inclusion in 3.7. So we prefer to have the possibility of submitting the whole project for inclusion in 3.8.

We apologise if this seems unnecessarily improvised. Please bear in mind that this all came about as a result of the fact that the original MUA 3.7 project (Course overview) was implemented in the Moodle 3.6 release, where MUA in fact had two projects.

And as a result of this decision we hope to have a major project in 3.8 too, whether it is the Relative dates project or one of the other great proposals ready for voting in the new year.

The minutes of today's committee meeting will be available soon.

It just remains for me to wish all MUA members and friends the very best for the holiday season and an excellent start to 2019, for all of us and for Moodle.
